Rosini handed him the air-letter from his news-editor as soon as he came into the office. He sat reading and re-reading it in a sort of horror. He had known it would come, he said, but he hadn’t believed it would be now.

Dear Guy,

Your recent coverage has been impressive, but we may have to move you shortly to Saigon. Burgess has taken shrapnel in the leg in an ambush incident (not serious), but we’ve moved him to Singapore for ‘rest and recuperation’.

As you’ll realise, now that President Johnson has stepped up the bombing of the North, and our own combat troops are in, Vietnam is increasingly becoming the major story. Meanwhile, the Indonesian-Malaysian situation, although it’s tense, seems to be at something of a stalemate.

I’d like your personal assessment of the situation, to help me decide whether to keep you there. Perhaps Kumar could keep us covered for a month or so. If anything big broke, we could recall you, or send someone from the Singapore office to take over.

Maybe Saigon will give you a fresh eye!
